This workshop explores the rich, colorful, traditional handmade glass material called smalti, a Byzantine glass that has been used in the great cathedrals of Italy for centuries.
In this 4 hour workshop you will learn about all things smalti! We will make a mosaic in the direct method, learn how to use B cuts and larger pieces of smalti to add interest to your work. I will demonstrate the use of the hardie and hammer to shape and texture these larger pieces of smalti. We will focus on cutting and laying smalti following the rules for creating a good line. We will use thinset mortar and play with different ways to set smalti. A choice of simple patterns will be provided. Class is from 9:00AM-1PM In my Rockport MA Studio
This class will explore the wonderful potential of mixing ceramic, shells, vitreous, smalti and stone. Feel free to bring a personal treasure to add to the mix.
Play with texture and color while focusing on the fundamentals of cutting materials using nippers to create a vibrant 8 x 8 mosaic or 4×12 mosaic in the direct method. Have fun mixing things up! Class is geared to beginner and intermediate mosaic artists, and all levels of experience are welcome.Time: 9:30 AM-5 PM
Happy Spring! During one of the many cold dark days during this past Winter while snug and warm in my studio, I signed up for an on line class about making a QR code in mosaic. Rachel Sager created a great class! The goal being to have people walking by my property scan the QR code an see what my studio is about and the kind of work I create. I plan to mount it to my sculpted tree. Even from a distance it works! Once the code is created you can do any type of work outside of the white border. I used both Italian and Mexican smalti in this work. If you would like to see it in person go to the Rockport Art Association and Museum on Main street in Rockport and see the Spring Group show from March 28- May 6 or walk by my yard!

Now that the snow is gone I was able to get the new form off the tree and into the studio! I hope to get to work on it soon.
