September 23rd one day mosaic workshop using smalti and mixed media

This class will explore the wonderful potential of mixing smalti, stone, shells and pottery. Feel free to bring a personal treasure to add to the mix.

Play with texture and color while focusing on the fundamentals of cutting materials using nippers to create a vibrant 8 x 8 mosaic or 4×12 mosaic in the direct method. Smalti is the beautifully colored glass seen in the mosaics of the great cathedrals throughout the world. It is hand cut from a large slab or pizza of glass. Its riven edge is used as the surface giving the mosaic a sparkling, sculptural and reflective quality. Observe the use of hammer and hardie to shape and texture larger pieces of smalti to add interest to your work. Class is geared to beginner and intermediate mosaic artists, and all levels of experience are welcome.
